Sludge Mining

dws-aaenmaas-sewage-mining-wwtp-aarle-rixtel-770px

The ideas that come to mind when people think about sewage is a daily task to relieve themselves. You go into a room where it doesn’t smell very nice but you have to flush down excretions from the body. Most people think of bodily waste as something to flush down but a development in science may change how we think on sludge. This advancement can raise the efficiency in recycling waste where we could recover metal in sludge.

The metal, which is very valuable is mixed with raw sewage because of the way the public works of the city are built. There is no separate sewer for these particulates so it is piped to the main sewage line for the city. This mix makes the bio solids very valuable:

“Researcher Kathleen Smith explained that growing metals shortages could soon make sewage mining economically viable.”There are metals everywhere… If you can get rid of some of the nuisance metals that currently limit how much of these biosolids we can use on fields and forests, and at the same time recover valuable metals and other elements, that’s a win-win,” she said.”

This not only can help the mining industry, farming industry but public health too. This can help spread research in other areas that will benefit mankind. The Ebola scare that went around the U.S. shows that we need to treat biological, bio-solids and certain wastes with more caution. This is again another win for the U.S. industries, farmers, and citizens where technologies will be put in place to help avert contamination.

“Today, about 60% of the sewage sludge in the United States is already spread on fields and forests as fertilizer. But there are concerns it poses contamination risks from toxic chemicals and pathogens, a subject Peccia’s lab studies. The remaining sludge is burned in incinerators or dumped in landfills.”

Sewage sludge could contain millions of dollars worth of gold

Reduction in waste and becoming more sophisticated in our pursuit of technology. We would find out that certain environments which we wrote off were because we didn’t place the right research and funding to simply solve the problem. Future generations will thank us for this.

Making the U.S. Military noncompetitive (Part 3)

se19-3_GEO_Station

This is the third and final part in a three part series to make the U.S. Military non-competitive in this globalized economy. The U.S. Armed Forces are still the number one military power in the world. No nation has the technology, arms, or ability needed to invade or challenge the U.S. Take a look the first post and second post about merging the branches to protect the security and interests of the United States of America. With the consolidation of the U.S Military within to meet the challenges of security threats. With the Department of the U.S. Air force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Coast Guard can focus on developing a consolidated space agency.

This new agency can help with the new threats from cyberspace, space, and help the U.S. military begin to put a permanent foothold into space. The creation of the new military space agency will use the combined resources of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy into one consolidated force where the power of the world’s most powerfully military agency will help direct the interests of the U.S. in space.  This agency can start the work and help the development of Space Elevators on Earth. We first need to define what is a space elevator:

“The space elevator is a system to transport satellites, computers, spaceship, etc. From Earth to Space in an easier and cheaper way than rockets.”

18enfuwsagjl5jpg

The advent of this agency will yield untold benefits for the U.S. Military, U.S. and Multinational corporations, NewSpace companies and overall humanity where since you’ll have the U.S. investing in all the upcoming technologies and commercializing disrupted tech on the horizon. NewSpace is the new industry where the U.S. should be pumping money into for the restructuring of U.S. economy to a future of a single global economy. NewSpace with other clusters will make the U.S. shake off this deflationary/recession period in the economy.

potential

Each investment in NewSpace will produce more tech cluster which can be used expand and develop the economy. If the U.S. Military takes the lead on this and moves with a swift fury on this the future of the U.S. will continue to look bright.

Making the U.S. Military noncompetitive (Part 1)

1002446_10151574583717979_1209685272_n

This is the first in a three part series to make the U.S. Military non-competitive in this globalized economy. The U.S. Armed Forces are still the number one military power in the world. No nation has the technology, arms, or ability needed to invade or challenge the U.S. Vice media did a great story on this where a military analysis from IHS Jane Dylan Lehrke says the ability to challenge the U.S. is not there. Dylan Lehrke goes through the strengths and very little weaknesses of the America homeland. Dylan also points out the insanity of trying to invade the U.S. Dylan’s analysis completely counters everything about the decline of the U.S. in the foreseeable future.

Merging the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps into the Department of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps.

9406a31cbb162a76aea0488400d61a44 189df7d3b23ed64fd4edec9a7643242e

This issue is a very important emotional issue for Soldiers, Marines, and the Brass in the higher echelons of these two organizations.  The organization that will come out of the merger will be a stronger and leaner department that will dominate on the ground war of any battle. I served in the Arizona Army National Guard and I’ve been with contact with both proud members of each branch. The members of each branch are proud of their sacrifice and brag about how hard they have it. However, the changing geopolitical dynamics in Asia, Middle East, and Europe creates a reset to conventional thinking. The creation of the Department of the Army and Marines will spur new tactics for the ground section of the U.S. military.

Let’s compare the difference of the services and this is stated well by Capt Andrew Cosgrove: look here to see the debate

Practically speaking…
– The Marine Corps 194, 000 Active Duty with 40,000 Reserve
– US Army 546,047 Active Duty with 559,244 in Reserve and National Guard

Budgets
– Army $244.9 Billion (31.8%)
– USMC $40 Billion (4% total is derived from the allotment taken from the Navy)

US Army mission
– Preserving the peace and security and providing for the defense of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions and any areas occupied by the United States
– Supporting the national policies
– Implementing the national objectives
– Overcoming any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States

USMC mission
– The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns;
– The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces in coordination with the Army and Air Force
– Such other duties as the President may direct.

A legendary soldier named Col. David Hackworth points out that the “Blackhawk Down” issue could have been avoided if the Army just called the Marines who had tanks four days away (here). The General requested tanks but was denied but they didn’t want to ask the Marines because “We are the Army and we don’t need the Marines.” This thinking needs to leave and a valid discussed on the compatibility of the Army and Marines must happen. The Marines can supplement the areas where the Army needs an act of congress to move by a simply Presidential Directive.

There is already an added benefit of using the joint force:

“The United States must choose to go to “war as a last resort and not a policy option of the first choice.” To this must be added another imperative. The United States Armed Forces must prioritize homeland defense as its primary mission and rethink the mistaken belief that the United States can somehow secure its interests through “lengthy military occupations of foreign lands.”

“Thus, this newly merged service must redirect its focus towards countering cyber warfare and CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear, and Explosives) attacks and should work towards bolstering its counterterrorism (CT) capabilities. This is because, due to the convergence of the global community, the United States may be vulnerable to attacks from within by homegrown terrorists and drug cartels—all of which may wreak havoc and may even cripple America’s domestic infrastructures.”

Why the United States Should Merge Its Ground Forces

SEPTEMBER 2013 by Jeong Lee

Merging the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Coast Guard into the Department of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.

The combination and creation of the Department of the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard will help the Air and Sea section of the U.S. Military. Merging the Department will help the force adapt to the changing dynamics in the Arctic, Southeast Asia, South China Sea, and the Persian Gulf. National Disasters and bioterrorism/pandemics events where quarantine areas are needed to contain the spread of the disease. The U.S. Navy also needs reforms for the culture, schools, and retention to compete in the future. A combo of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard culture will change the mentality of the British Naval Culture into the American Naval Culture.

The interoperability of these forces will help any challenge in the future whether it’s the drug interdiction mission or Ebola, Tuberculosis, or any contagion.  When you need to isolate certain person(s) and transport medical supplies into that area the Department will have the resource to react. The U.S. Coast Guard can be used not only for their traditional mission but for national disasters in other countries like how they responded in New Orleans and Galveston, Texas. The Eighth Coast District is in the American Heartland which would call for the updating the Posse Comitatus Act since the Coast Guard will be put back into the Department of Defense and merged with the Air Force and Navy.

“In order to facilitate the most effective and efficient Department of Defense, we contend it is beneficial to first revise the National Military Strategy. This revision will more effectively support the president’s overall National Security Strategy. Reorienting the DoD into a set of forces that are actually joint in execution will strengthen the American military and thus enhance overall national security.”

Even the U.K. is debating about making a single force model on the U.S. Marine Corps which is something to think about?

Nextgen – A model for reform of American Government

10143793-large

The changing environment of aviation will yield untold benefits for the market. Consolidations of the major powers to increase competitiveness with the U.S. economy will produce competition.  These changes will force U.S. policy makers to re-examine certain viewpoints in regards to government and the free market. The coming traffic of 1 billion flyers will force many aspects of the FAA to change to meet the increasing demand for air travel. Wired magazine tells a great story about Brian Howard who wanted to leave the earth but wanted to damage the U.S. Air Traffic Control System marking his unfortunate demise.

Brian ultimately showed the how outdated and ineffective the current system “HOST” is for the U.S. The FAA responded with the next generation system to replace HOST named “NextGen.” The Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization (AIRR) Act is a possible model for reform with another initiative called U.S. Digital Service. This can create new high tech jobs with the ability not to be outsourced which will help with clusters in the U.S. from declining in the short run.

Saab-rTWR-control-550

This example can be applied to other government agencies like the VA health system, Federal and State infrastructure, and the U.S. education system where it is still in government control and can direct a centralized education system but it has the ability to fire people. The U.S. Government need to be reformed to compete in this high speed/high tech world.

Regional Thinking (Creating a Friendlier Environment for Competitiveness)

usa_statesusmap3

The age of the states is over in the global economy as regional and multilateral agreements are becoming the norm. ASEAN, AIIB, EU, BRIC and the IBSA-trilateral are becoming more common. The regional consolidation based on the Federal Reserve System would bring great benefits to the U.S. Instead of 50 different systems, a reduction to 12 will help corporations, small business, and individuals with their decisions. This will help in developing the mega region/corridor system (Staple Corridors (Global Cities)) that was posted two articles ago. The ease of business will go up as when you have multiple parties that agree to a single agreement.

Now, I’m not saying to get rid of the 50 states but put a layer above them to compete with the coming Indian and Chinese age. I say look at the Chinese province’s system to become more competitive. Each of the provinces has about the same population as about 5 to 6 European countries. The way to make America continue to be a powerhouse in this age is reforms, innovation, and consolidations. With the weight of multiple states and governors behind them makes the business environment in the U.S. very favorable and friendly.

2050_Map_Megaregions2008

This mega region/corridor can be a model for the development of the U.S. economy. To see the strengths of each region please look here: http://www.america2050.org/megaregions.html.

Instead of States, you’ll begin to look at America’s regional clusters which are the reason for the U.S.A being so strong. Resources, institutions, and funding could be directed to these areas to diversify, improve, or invest in new tech or business clusters.

The Hamilton Institute calls for the Regional Plan Association to be expanded to each one of these districts. Since there are 12 Fed districts then there should be 12 RPA’s devoted to theses districts. Please see here: http://www.rpa.org/

Countering GMD and Hardening the Communications Sector

sunspot_med carrington-event-1859

Solar flares, geomagnetic disturbances, and the Carrington Flare (event) are a threat. Significant attention and debates need to be held in the public space on the risks these events pose to humanity.  This is an opportunity to create jobs, devote more resources into space, and help the technology to be developed to help counter the effect on the global economy. The many countless lives and the crimes that will be prevented from a fully function grid will help keep society in order. Future Generations will thank us for getting this started.

The Carrington Flare (or Event) was a solar event that happens on Friday, September 1, 1859. The solar flare hit the earth and was one of the largest solar storms recorded. In the early 19oo’s the impact on the communication and economy was felt. The telegraph system was nearly fried and paper caught on fire. The event was the biggest event that experts in the field say. If an event happens like that again today it would totally wreck our lifestyle.

The Underground Energy Grid (Underground Electric Utilities and National Infrastructure)

maxresdefault

The debate about the crumbling and outdated infrastructure of the United States is a crisis. The country’s infrastructure which gauges the health of the nation is at risk of hindering development and quality of life. The U.S. has to take the lead on getting a 21st-century infrastructure in place to accelerate the development of the economy. Making the American Financial Sector well capitalized with people investing and making money work for them which in-turns strengthen the economy. Following the situation in Flint, Michigan and the long term damage, it is doing not only to the image of the U.S. but to the welfare of the citizens of that town that needs medical treatment for the rest of their lives. We have to begin the process of upgrading our infrastructure to stop the bleeding in American Cities.

To prevent another Flint, Michigan, I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse and looming cyber attack on the U.S. infrastructure. Brian Sheets who is CEO of SKYRON Systems Inc, laid out a plan to help get the ball rolling on the badly needed upgrade.

“Upgrading our electric utility infrastructure should be an integral part of the initiative to upgrade our national infrastructure. While roads, the FAA’s new ADS-B ground-based stations, water, wastewater, natural gas, and electric utilities are all different infrastructure issues, their upgrade should be coordinated together as part of a holistic approach to the national infrastructure upgrade initiative. As many studies have recommended, this would also provide an excellent opportunity to evaluate high-risk locations for the installation of underground electric utilities.”

By moving the energy grid underground and starting there can create opportunities of other areas that are of concern to policymakers, construction firms, and corporations:

  • Construction related to new or refurbished roadways is an excellent time to incorporate the installation of underground utilities.
  • Likewise, when designing the optimal routing of transmission and distribution feeder lines, it would be prudent to consider how new or existing adjacent roadways could be incorporated into the same construction effort.
  • Several reports advocated the analysis of at-risk geographic areas which could benefit from the installation of underground utilities. Incorporating this into the national infrastructure upgrade initiative would be timely.
  • The increase in construction jobs associated with the infrastructure upgrade would lower unemployment while also contributing more to federal and state coffers in the form of additional income taxes. In so doing, both people and deficit reduction benefit. A portion of this benefit is associated with the Recovery Act which provides $100 million for workforce training.
  • Taking a tops-down, singular, holistic design approach will make the resultant design more economical and efficient. Elimination of regional barriers, the unification, and operating specifications & standards, and the standardization of installation protocols will contribute toward a more effective design and project execution.
  • A centrally designed infrastructure will lay the foundation for more coordinated improvements in the future, resulting in less future costs.

A piecemeal approach to tackle the tough problems in infrastructure will help put the faith back in politics. The confidence of the nation will rise and the political battles in the future will become to be seen not as a position of strength but from incompetence. 9 benefits are outlined by Brian Sheets that would be a model for other government projects from creating a task force to move the Energy Grid underground.

  • More efficient transmission of electricity
  • Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances
  • Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers
  • Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates
  • Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
  • Better integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy systems
  • Improved security

Staple Corridors (Global Cities)

Mexico-Inbound-Outbound-Logistics

“The border between Mexico and the United States spans four U.S. states, six Mexican states, and has over twenty commercial crossings. The long border between the two countries means that peace and security in that region are important to the U.S.’s national security and international trade.”

The integration of the global economy means new methods and experiments need to be tried. The Hamilton Institute calls for the formation of global corridors in the U.S. where multiple cities are lobbed together to create a larger economic impact. I will use two examples to show the success in this way of thinking. One, I will use is the San Diego-San Ysidro-Tijuana corridor which is home for me. The other is the Detroit-Windsor corridor which in up north at the U.S-Canada Border. These combined resources will help to boost the economic outlook in the long term in strengthening the G.D.P.

San Diego-San Ysidro-Tijuana Corridor

AHLB4465

The San Diego-Tijuana Corridor is the largest border crossing in the world.  Between 25 million vehicles and 100 million people enter the United States every year and if you want to walk across the border it could include a two-hour wait. Tijuana is the second most visited city in the western hemisphere with New York City being number one. This will help prop up and spread the experiment of the super-corridor.

Technology, biotechnology, cyber security, military contractors, maritime, and manufacturing clusters will be the engine of the combined cities. This new corridor will include multiple cities and business areas which will boost the population to 6.5 million people to create a new mega region in North America.

Detroit–Windsor Mega Region

detroit_skyline_windsor_900x600

Detroit Windsor corridor is one of the Quebec City-Windsor mega region and the staple to the north in terms of the economy. It has a combined population of 5.7 million people and the latter is least 18 million people by a 2011 census. The Detroit-Windsor corridor is a technological powerhouse which is in the running for developing nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and hydrogen fuel cell/clean tech. It is the home of the big three automakers in the U.S. were two auto firms (General Motors, Ford) are in the U.S and one in located in the Windsor area(Chrysler Canada Headquarters).

This help cooperation between the regions because just because just your in one region does not mean you cannot you work with other regions.  Silicon Valley/Detroit collaboration in the future of transportation is the engine of growth and innovation. The region is heavily talented with the R&D, Universities, and the companies to make it happen. The only thing from making this region from exploding is the role and backing of the U.S. Government.

Keeping Antibiotics for the Next Generation.

There is always an opening for hope and advancement in the darkest times. The antibiotics era needs new investments to keep unneeded suffering or deaths to be prevented. The end of the antibiotics is not an “apocalypse” in the sense of the end of everything. There are cycles in economics, business and now in medicine where you have a period of innovation and development. Just in many other fields there comes a time where the investments and R&D simply become exhausted. New fields, research, and funding need to be established to keep progress advancing.

*The picture is the good guys called Bacteriophage Virus*

By reforming the tax code of the U.S.A and creating incentives for Pharmaceutical industry to cure, treat, and destroy “bugs” will help the economy, social net and the republic at large. Healthcare will stop being so polarized because the Insurance industry will be able to keep getting a profit while paying for the claims of its customers. The benefits of a population that are healthy and able to develop their true potential will have incalculable events for our economy.

Introducing the Tesla Mobility Group

photo

With the VW scandal and the Consumer Reports downgrade of Tesla’s Model S has created a new prospect for me. Tesla, which is under the tutelage of Elon Musk who is breaking down a lot of barriers. Elon has transform industries whether it is in commercial space exploration with SpaceX, green energy with Solar City, and the automotive industry with Tesla’s electric cars. The emissions scandal which has done the company severe damage on all fronts and at the time of this writing is still ongoing. I have a disruptive idea for a disruptive identity by putting VW under Elon Musk’s Tesla Motor Group to form the Tesla Mobility Group. This will help create a new automotive titan which helps to move the industry towards sustainability.

70001197_logofcpvw

This is entirely possible by cashing out the controlling interests and giving Elon control of the organization. I recommend the U.S. Government (and all players) to consider this to help shift suppliers to begin combat declining industry clusters in the U.S.  By reforming the tax code, welcoming entrepreneurs from all over the world, and a high tech immigration policy by shifting to new clusters to revitalize the economy. Some say that this is the government choosing winners but the market has already done that. The demand is there which leave certain issues to resolve like upgrading infrastructural concerns, tax credits for establishing entities, and creating the incentive for customers to purchase the future.
