Regional Thinking (Creating a Friendlier Environment for Competitiveness)

The age of the states is over in the global economy as regional and multilateral agreements are becoming the norm. ASEAN, AIIB, EU, BRIC, and the IBSA-trilateral are becoming more common. The regional consolidation based on the Federal Reserve System would bring great benefits to the U.S. Instead of 50 different systems, a reduction to 12 will help corporations, small businesses, and individuals with their decisions. This will help in developing the mega-region/corridor system (Staple Corridors (Global Cities)) that was posted two articles ago. The ease of business will go up when you have multiple parties that agree to a single agreement.

Now, I’m not saying to get rid of the 50 states but put a layer above them to compete with the coming Indian and Chinese age. I say look at the Chinese province’s system to become more competitive. Each of the provinces has about the same population as about 5 to 6 European countries. The way to make America continue to be a powerhouse in this age is through reforms, innovation, and consolidations. The weight of multiple states and governors behind them makes the business environment in the U.S. very favorable and friendly.

Instead of States, you’ll begin to look at America’s regional clusters which are the reason for the U.S.A being so strong. Resources, institutions, and funding could be directed to these areas to diversify, improve, or invest in new tech or business clusters.

World Standard English (Globish)

I’m no qualms about developing the global economy and this is the way it bonds to the global economy. The spread of the English language which difficulty has been a barrier to its rapid spread but the advent of Globish has simplified it by using 1500 words from the English language to create a pass into English. Robert McCrum has written a book on the spread of Globish. He states:

“Is an overwhelmingly economic phenomenon—the language of Singaporean businessmen closing deals with the help of a small arsenal of English words, and of European officials calming financial markets by uttering stock phrases on television.”

Globlish can dissolve borders and tensions between people because they can speak the same language. It will help people to understand and learn from each other. Also, they could communicate to each other the political and cultural mistakes that they made which would help new economies develop. They would do much good not only to the U.S. but the global economy.

This picture above shows the simplicity that happens when Globish is used when compared to the Full English language. Frederick A Allen quoted Michael Sakpinker in FT that said:

“When a Japanese employee met a Belgian, a Chilean and an Italian, they managed. None spoke English brilliantly but each knew the others were making mistakes too. When an American or British manager walked in, everything changed. The native speakers talked too fast and used mysterious expressions.”

Globish is opening doors all over the world.

This chart from the show the English as the First Language Initiative shows the most impoverished and violent nations are the nation outside the English Language.

I’m leaving this quote from “Globish for Beginners” which states the opportunities of having Globish spread around the world.

Countering GMD and Hardening the Communications Sector

Solar flares, geomagnetic disturbances, and the Carrington Flare (event) are a threat. Significant attention and debates need to be held in the public space on the risks these events pose to humanity. This is an opportunity to create jobs, devote more resources to space, and help the technology be developed to help counter the effect on the global economy. The many countless lives and the crimes that will be prevented from a fully functional grid will help keep society in order. Future Generations will thank us for getting this started.

The Carrington Flare (or Event) was a solar event that happened on Friday, September 1, 1859. The solar flare hit the earth and was one of the largest solar storms recorded. In the early 19oo’s the impact on the communication and economy was felt. The telegraph system was nearly fried and paper caught on fire. The event was the biggest event that experts in the field say. If an event happens like that again today it would totally wreck our lifestyle.

Earth magazine has a very detailed explanation of the horrific damage that will happen all over the world if we do not start to work out ways to shield infrastructure from this.

The Underground Energy Grid (Underground Electric Utilities and National Infrastructure)

The debate about the crumbling and outdated infrastructure of the United States is a crisis. The country’s infrastructure which gauges the health of the nation is at risk of hindering development and quality of life. The U.S. has to take the lead on getting a 21st-century infrastructure in place to accelerate the development of the economy. Making the American Financial Sector well-capitalized with people investing and making money work for them which in-turns strengthen the economy. Following the situation in Flint, Michigan, the long-term damage, it is doing not only to the image of the U.S. but to the welfare of the citizens of that town that needs medical treatment for the rest of their lives. We have to begin the process of upgrading our infrastructure to stop the bleeding in American Cities.

To prevent another Flint, Michigan, I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse and looming cyber attack on the U.S. infrastructure. Brian Sheets who is CEO of SKYRON Systems Inc laid out a plan to help get the ball rolling on the badly needed upgrade.

“Upgrading our electric utility infrastructure should be an integral part of the initiative to upgrade our national infrastructure. While roads, the FAA’s new ADS-B ground-based stations, water, wastewater, natural gas, and electric utilities are all different infrastructure issues, their upgrade should be coordinated together as part of a holistic approach to the national infrastructure upgrade initiative. As many studies have recommended, this would also provide an excellent opportunity to evaluate high-risk locations for the installation of underground electric utilities.”

Moving the energy grid underground and starting there can create opportunities for other areas that are of concern to policymakers, construction firms, and corporations:

Construction related to new or refurbished roadways is an excellent time to incorporate the installation of underground utilities.
Likewise, when designing the optimal routing of transmission and distribution feeder lines, it would be prudent to consider how new or existing adjacent roadways could be incorporated into the same construction effort.
Several reports advocated the analysis of at-risk geographic areas which could benefit from the installation of underground utilities. Incorporating this into the national infrastructure upgrade initiative would be timely.
The increase in construction jobs associated with the infrastructure upgrade would lower unemployment while also contributing more to federal and state coffers in the form of additional income taxes. In so doing, both people and deficit reduction benefit. A portion of this benefit is associated with the Recovery Act which provides $100 million for workforce training.
Taking a tops-down, singular, holistic design approach will make the resultant design more economical and efficient. Elimination of regional barriers, the unification, and operating specifications & standards, and the standardization of installation protocols will contribute toward a more effective design and project execution.
A centrally designed infrastructure will lay the foundation for more coordinated improvements in the future, resulting in less future costs.

A piecemeal approach to tackling the tough problems in infrastructure will help put the faith back in politics. The confidence of the nation will rise and the political battles in the future will become to be seen not as a position of strength but from incompetence. 9 benefits are outlined by Brian Sheets that would be a model for other government projects from creating a task force to moving the Energy Grid underground.

More efficient transmission of electricity
Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances
Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers
Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates
Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
Better integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy systems
Improved security

The Sinaloa Corporation (Bringing the Narco State into the global economy)

The Hamilton Institute has taken a real detailed look at its last post and made this post to counter the criticisms of one area that is fueling the insecurity of the United States. Integration and decriminalization will help with the co-association of all elements in System D in the overall economy to help alleviate poverty. The drug war is not working and is causing unneeded harm to the most vulnerable in society. The Hamilton Institute calls for the detailing of specific strengths of each cartel and paying them not to kill, deal, and retrain the members to end the horrific violence that is going on.

The Hamilton Institute calls for the creation of the Sinaloa Corporation from the elements of the Sinaloa Federation. The 2016 election is showing the changing marijuana climate in the U.S and the research of Columbia University Neuroscientist Carl Hart. The drug war has only produced insecurity, shrinking of the economy, and removal of voting rights for at-risk communities. This further creates a cycle that destroys normal people who would live their life. The Sinaloa Corporation would be marijuana, opioid, energy conglomerate that is publicly traded. Even El Chapo said he wants out of the drug business:

“I give in to the sense of security offered by the calm of Chapo and his men. There is the pervasive feeling that if there were a threat, they would know it. We eat, drink, and talk for hours. He is interested in the movie business and how it works. He’s unimpressed with its financial yield. The P&L high side doesn’t add up to the downside risk for him. He suggests to us that we consider switching our career paths to the oil business. He says he would aspire to the energy sector, but that his funds, being illicit, restrict his investment opportunities. He cites (but asks me not to name in print) a host of corrupt major corporations, both within Mexico and abroad. He notes with delighted disdain several through which his money has been laundered, and who take their own cynical slice of the narco pie.”

The model is the Prohibition era which you had the same murder, mass shootings, and conflicts in the 1920s with the mob. Many who made their money that way moved away from the illegal activities when they began to integrate with society. The best way to end the illegal activities is to dissolve System D and begin the process of normalization towards some sectors of it. El Mayo of the Sinaloa Federation said it best in 2010:

“The problem of drug trafficking involves millions [of people],” Zambada said. “How do you control that? As for the drug lords, whether they’re locked up, killed or extradited, their replacements are already there lurking.”

Staple Corridors (Global Cities)

“The border between Mexico and the United States spans four U.S. states, six Mexican states, and has over twenty commercial crossings. The long border between the two countries means that peace and security in that region are important to the U.S.’s national security and international trade.”

The integration of the global economy means new methods and experiments need to be tried. The Hamilton Institute calls for the formation of global corridors in the U.S. where multiple cities are lobbed together to create a larger economic impact. I will use two examples to show the success of this way of thinking. One, I will use is the San Diego-San Ysidro-Tijuana corridor which is home to me. The other is the Detroit-Windsor corridor which is up north at the U.S-Canada Border. These combined resources will help to boost the economic outlook in the long term by strengthening the G.D.P.

San Diego-San Ysidro-Tijuana Corridor

The San Diego-Tijuana Corridor is the largest border crossing in the world. Between 25 million vehicles and 100 million people enter the United States every year and if you want to walk across the border it could include a two-hour wait. Tijuana is the second most visited city in the western hemisphere with New York City being number one. This will help prop up and spread the experiment of the super-corridor.

Technology, biotechnology, cyber security, military contractors, maritime, and manufacturing clusters will be the engine of the combined cities. This new corridor will include multiple cities and business areas which will boost the population to 6.5 million people to create a new mega-region in North America.

Detroit–Windsor Mega Region

Detroit Windsor corridor is one of the Quebec City-Windsor mega-region and the staple to the north in terms of the economy. It has a combined population of 5.7 million people and the latter is at least 18 million people by a 2011 census. The Detroit-Windsor corridor is a technological powerhouse that is in the running for developing nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and hydrogen fuel cell/cleantech. It is the home of the big three automakers in the U.S. where two auto firms (General Motors, Ford) are in the U.S, and one is located in the Windsor area(Chrysler Canada Headquarters).

This helps cooperation between the regions means just because you’re in one region does not mean you cannot work with other regions. Silicon Valley/Detroit collaboration in the future of transportation is the engine of growth and innovation. The region is heavily talented with the R&D, Universities, and companies to make it happen. The only thing from making this region from exploding is the role and backing of the U.S. Government.

The Age of Super Banking (Japanese, European and Russian banking consolidation)

The planet’s biggest banks are going to get bigger to help in the reduction of poverty. The rise of East Asia, urbanization of Africa, and rising incomes (middle class) in Latin America have caused the Hamilton Institute to call for Western Bank Consolidations. Some ideas that we call for based on market capitalization would be Barclays-Citigroup, Wells Fargo-HSBC, Bank of America-Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase-BNP Paribas, Mizuho Financial Group-Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. This will help create new wealth in the capital markets to feverishly compete against massively capitalized Chinese banks, and set a course in prosperity in the financial sector.

This will help in the tax plan that the Hamilton Institute is calling for where U.S. Sectors on the Stock Market can get the resources to increase cap x expenditures and hire the employees to oversee these upgrades. This will help upgrade the U.S. Economic outlook in the short and long run.

The shirking of the global “unbanked” will help with financial inclusion in the global economy. The creation of such new customers and wealth will spur new advances and help uplift humanity. This will help counter the competition of the naysayers and the gloomier outlook they project.
